Summer Slumbers

If we’re not complaining about the weather, we’re complaining about the weather! The last few weeks of sunshine have been glorious, but undoubtedly the ‘heat wave’ has taken its toll on many of us. Hot, sticky nights being the biggest bug bear of all.  As the temperatures crept up lots of people experienced sleepless nights due to the humid conditions.

In one of our previous posts we shared our top tips on keeping cool at night.  From sleeping under cool, cotton sheets, to having a cool shower or bath before bedtime, these simple strategies all help to cool the body in preparation for sleep. Did you know though that a number of beds and mattresses are now so technologically advanced that they can also contribute to keeping you cool at night?

Is buying a bigger bed better?

Bed Size Matters!

As parents, one of the many milestones in our children’s lives is the transition from cot to bed.  Buying your child’s first bed is an exciting experience and ultimately it is all about giving them more freedom, space and room to grow. How many of us though give ourselves the same star treatment?

In the UK the most popular bed size is a double bed (135cm by 190cm) – the narrowest and among the shortest in the world. People in Belgium, Greece, Holland, Ireland, Finland and Switzerland have a preference for much bigger beds. According to The Sleep Council, people are much more likely to enjoy an undisturbed night’s sleep on bigger beds.  Their findings also suggest that king and super-king sized beds are on the increase. ‘In 1993, 20% of people bought new beds that were 5ft or more wide. Ten years later sales of king and super-king sized beds represented about 30% of sales.’

Move on Up!

As standards of living and nutrition have improved, the average Briton has got taller: official Health of the Nation figures show 30% of men under 25 are now over six feet tall with the average woman about 5′ 4″. When buying a new bed, size is important! For many couples a double bed size of 4ft 6in x 6ft 3in really isn’t big enough for two to sleep well without disturbing each other: studies have shown that more space – even a slight move up to a 5′ x 6′ 6″ King size bed – can make a lot of difference to night-time comfort. If your bedroom space allows, there are larger bed sizes available including custom made beds and mattresses. Zip and link beds and dual adjustable electric beds also provide differing comfort and support requirements. Remember though, it’s always worth taking the time to decide on what is best for your needs.

Try before you buy

  1. Decide upon your priorities in advance. For example what is your budget? Do you require storage? What size of bed can your bedroom accommodate?
  2. When you visit us try a selection of beds for comparison before you buy and set aside enough time to do so properly so you can fully appreciate the differences.
  3. Buy a bed that offers the correct support and comfort for your weight and build – not just firmness.
  4. Wear comfortable clothing, remove any outdoor wear including your shoes and lie on each bed for at least 5 minutes. Lie in your normal sleep position and make some turns, too.
  5. Shop together if the bed’s for two as you both need to feel comfortable.
  6. Remember that a bed is a mattress and a base, don’t consider them in isolation.
  7. Think big! Larger beds are more comfortable and being disturbed by a partner is one of the most common sleep complaints. With a larger bed you are less likely to disturb one another.
  8. Check your bed’s dimensions. Bed sizes are not standardised and even if they have the same name (eg King size) they may not be the same size. The depth of a new mattress may also be important if you are using a bedstead as your base.
  9. Like everything in life, you get what you pay for in regards of both product and service so spend as much as you can afford.
  10. Bespoke sizes, with our excellent relationships with leading manufacturers we can quickly arrange for the manufacture and delivery of a custom sized bed to suit you or your home.

*Please remember, you’re going to spend more than 20,000 hours on your bed during its seven year lifespan, as such it really is worth setting aside a little time and effort in the beginning to make sure you make the right choice.

Top Tips on Buying a New Bed

Our Top Tips for Choosing A New Bed

Am I due a new bed?

According to research by the Furniture Industry Research Association, 2011 A bed may have deteriorated by as much as 70% from its ‘as new’ state after 10 years. It also showed that beds as little as six years old could offer significantly less support and comfort than a new one, thanks to wear and tear not just from body weight and movement but also sweat and debris such as skin, scales, hair etc.’

With National Bed Month happening in March, maybe it’s time to start thinking about buying a new bed. Consider what type of bed you need.  Your choice of bed will be determined by the layout of your bedroom, the space you have available, your design choices and whether the bed is for two people – ideally a purchase decision made together.

With so many products in the market, it can be a daunting task choosing which bed is right for you. Ultimately providing you with a great night’s sleep, buying a new bed is a long term investment and it’s worth spending as much as you can afford. At Dalzell’s we always recommend that you visit us in-store to try out different beds before ordering online or by phone.

New Year, New Bed?

Sleep, beautiful sleep

Now that the New Year has arrived, maybe you’ve decided that this is the year that you’re going to sleep better.  Often unaware that our bed is one of the main reasons for not sleeping well, sleeping in a bed that no longer provides the proper support or comfort can affect the quality of our sleep. According to research conducted by sleep expert Dr Chris Idzikowski, sleeping in an uncomfortable bed could cost you up to an hour’s sleep a night.

Am I due a New Bed?

Changes in our lifestyle and the quality, care and amount of use our beds get impact on whether we need to think about buying a new bed. Factors such as getting married, moving to a new home, losing or gaining weight and our age can affect the level of comfort and support our bed provides. How we use our beds and the length of time we spend in them e.g. reading, watching television or the occasional use of a spare bed can be the deciding factors in choosing a new bed.  Buying a new bed is an important investment especially when we consider that we spend a third of our life in bed.

The Bed M.O.T.

Ask yourself the following 10 questions to find out whether you’re ready for a new bed:

2. Did you have your best night’s sleep recently on a different bed?

9. Are the base, legs or castors lumpy, worn or wobbly?
No [ ] Yes [ ]

10. Would it be embarrassing if the neighbours saw your bed without its covers?

If you answered yes to four or more questions the advice from the Sleep Council is to “Get a new bed fast”.

How to Create the Perfect Sleep Environment

The Perfect Sleep Environment

Did you wake up this morning feeling refreshed? If not, you’re not alone. According to the recently published Great British Sleep Survey, people from Northern Ireland are considered among the ‘Worst Sleepers’ in the UK.

What Keeps us Awake?

Citing bodily discomfort, noise, partners, room temperature and light levels as the top five physical factors affecting sleep, “the racing mind” was considered the main cause of Sleeplessness. Affecting us both emotionally and physically, Sleep Deprivation significantly contributes to daytime fatigue and lack of concentration.

What Sleep Advice is Available?

Fortunately though, organisations such as The Sleep Council are here to help, and as a certified member of The Sleep Council, Dalzell’s of Markethill are fully trained to offer expert bed, mattress and sleep advice to our customers.  Or why not check out our Bed and Mattress Buyers Guides at Armagh Beds.com Still unsure if your Bed or Bedroom is giving you the Quality Sleep you deserve? Read on for some top tips  to creating the perfect sleep environment from sleep expert, Kathleen McGrath.

Top Tips for the Perfect Sleep Environment:

  1. Just the Right Temperature – between 16 and 18 degrees centigrade. Feeling too hot or too cold in the night can lead to restless sleep and wakefulness.
  2. Kept dark. Light is a common sleep ‘robber’ so investing in a good pair of well lined curtains which keep the Light Out and the Room Dark can be really helpful.
  3. Free from Distractions. So lose the laptop, the mobile, the computer games, the television and anything else that is likely to distract from the serious business of sleep!
  4. Comfortable. And central to comfortable is a Good Supportive Bed – the bigger the better (for less partner disturbance) and as good as the budget can stretch to: we spend a third of our life in bed so why compromise on the cost of a good night’s sleep?
  5. Relaxing. The bedroom should be an oasis of Calm and Tranquility – uncluttered and devoted to the land of dreams.
