Student Essentials

Now that the ‘A’ Level results are out and young people are preparing to head off to college and university it’s time to get them kitted out for their new ventures.  As a local family business, with a set of business values you’d like to expect but don’t always get nowadays, we know that every penny counts when getting our kids university ready. Yes, we’ve been there, done that, and bought the T-shirts!

At Dalzells we retail a great selection of bedding products, beds and mattresses that will see your ‘little darlings’ through their studies. From Pillows, Duvets, Mattress & Pillow Protectors through to the all essential Electric Blankets, to stave off those winter chills in student digs, rest assured we’ve got you covered! What’s more, with our ‘spend and save voucher’, you’ll even get something back to cushion the costs of getting them started in their studies.

Bedding Essentials

Duvets

Moving away from home can be challenging at the best of times,  but what better way to seek comfort than sinking into a fresh and cosy bed with a comfy duvet.  Duvets vary in their softness, level of warmth and weight allowing for seasonal adjustments and personal choice. Our great selection of Single Duvets and Double Duvets from Bedroom Couture will ensure that no matter how drafty the students digs are, your child will be warm and toasty.

Pillows

Whether your child’s preference is for a luxury memory pillow, like the King Koil Memory Fill, or your prefer a good value range such as the Bedroom Couture Polycotton twin pillow set, we’ve a style and range to suit everyone. Although many pillows are now fully washable, (yes we know, that may be asking too much of our little darlings!), it is advisable to replace them every two years. Pillows that have become lumpy or discoloured will no longer provide proper support and could contain high levels of dust mites and skin; a nuisance for allergy sufferers.  Designed to protect your pillow against soiling and general wear and tear, it’s worth remembering that good quality Pillow Protectors will also keep pillows fresher and cleaner for longer.

Mattress Protection

If your child is moving into student accommodation where there are existing beds and mattresses, it really is worth considering buying Mattress Protectors.  Enclosing the mattress similarly to a fitted sheet, mattress protectors are available in a range of fabric types. Our selection of 100% cotton mattress protectors are perfect for added bed freshness and ensuring a cool sleeping environment. For allergy sufferers, we also retail a huge array of anti-allergy, natural mattress protectors to keep the bed allergen-free, or prevent existing allergens from being present in older mattresses.

Electric Blankets

As the colder nights draw in it’s important that our kids are warm in their new student accommodation. At Armagh Beds.com we stock some of the leading Electric Blanket brands, with the added reassurance that they have undergone rigorous testing and conform to all relevant UK and European safety standards. So whether it’s a fitted under electric blanket or an over electric blanket we’ve a great range of products from leading brands such as Morphy Richards and Beurer.

Beds and Mattresses

We appreciate that the budget may not stretch to buying beds and mattresses but with a huge selection of cheap beds and mattresses in stock it might be more affordable than you think. Our expert staff are always happy to advise and as we only deal directly and in bulk with manufacturers we can achieve real savings which we pass directly to you. Choosing the Perfect Mattress

Considering  we spend a third of our life in bed, a good mattress is a serious investment.  It really is worth the time to get to know what mattress options are available and what type is best for you. A good quality mattress aids deeper, more refreshing sleep and gives your body better support.

Quick Guide to Buying a New Mattress

  1. If you find that you are waking up with aches or pains, or your mattress just doesn’t seem to be giving you the right comfort and support level, it’s probably time for a change.
  2. Before buying a new mattress, research all the options available to you. Remember that a bed is a mattress and a base, don’t consider them in isolation e.g. a sprung divan will make a mattress seem softer than a platform top or solid top divan or slatted base.
  3. When trying out your new mattress, wear comfortable clothing, remove any outdoor wear including your shoes and lie on each bed for quite a long time – at least 5 minutes. Lie in your normal sleep position and make some turns, too. Don’t forget to shop together if the bed’s for two, as you both need to feel comfortable.
  4. Most mattresses need regular turning to ensure even wear and tear.  However, if this would pose a difficulty for you there are now plenty of non-turn options, which only need rotating occasionally.
  5. If you’re concerned about disposing of your old mattress safley, don’t worry! At Dalzell’s we offer Free Delivery* and Free Collection and Recycling of your old mattress throughout Northern Ireland, and Counties Monaghan, Louth and Dublin, in the Republic of Ireland. What’s more, we’ll also unpack and set-up your new mattress in a room of your choosing and dispose of all the packaging. *Delivery throughout the rest of Ireland available at Highly Competitive Rates.
  6. Orthopaedic is often a term used to describe mattresses with a firmer spring. It’s more important to choose a mattress that gives proper support as opposed to just being very hard.

Types of Mattress

Bonelli Spring Or Open Coil

The most widely used type of spring is the Bonnell spring or open coil. The number of springs used in an open coil mattress varies but a typical 5’ mattress contains in the region of 325, or more for higher quality beds. The level of support offered by an Open Coil mattress is also dependent on the gauge (thickness) of the wire with 12.5 considered a very firm mattress. A great value for money model, open coil spring mattresses are lighter than other mattresses, easier to turn, which extends the life of the mattress.

Continuous Spring Mattresses

Somewhat different from an Open Coil, a Continuous Spring mattress system involves smaller coils and the gauge of wires is usually lighter. This higher spring count is usually formed from a single length of wire and the bed springs are linked vertically as opposed to horizontally. Continuous Springs are a cheaper alternative to both Open Coil/Bonnell and Pocket Spring mattresses.

Pocket Spring Mattresses

The Pocket Spring offers a more luxurious sensation and is the fastest growing type of mattress spring by market share. With its smaller individual, softer springs which are separately housed in fabric pockets they work independently when responding to body weight to relieve pressure points. A Pocket Spring mattress offers an ideal sleep solution if you and your partner differ considerably in weight or size. With a higher spring count, a pocket spring mattress comes in a range of tensions to suit a wide range of individual needs.

Latex Mattresses

Latex Mattresses, also known as Talalay Mattresses, are a premium bedding product. Derived from the sap of a rubber tree, Latex Mattresses have a distinctive, resilient feel which is incredibly durable and which provides long lasting support, conforming perfectly to your body’s contours for supreme comfort and spinal support.

Memory Foam Mattresses

Memory Foam Mattresses slowly respond to body temperature and weight to take the shape of the user. This individual moulding process to your body’s shape, provides unrivalled suport and comfort thus guaranteeing relief for back, neck and joint pain through the best natural sleeping posture with pressure evenly distributed across the mattress area.

Spring Clean Your Bed

At the end of a long day is there anything more inviting than slipping in to a fresh, clean bed?  We spend a third of our lives in bed so it’s important that our bedrooms are comfortable and healthy spaces.  And with spring just a few short weeks away what better time to give our beds the attention they deserve.

Bed Care

When we consider that sleeping in an uncomfortable bed could cost up to one hour’s sleep a night, it’s worth considering  the quality, care and amount of use our beds get. A simple way of keeping our beds fresh is to throw back the bed clothes in the morning and leave the bed to air for 20 minutes to allow body moisture to evaporate. If you have a divan bed, vacuum or brush the base, and clean with a mild detergent and warm or cold water. Remember never soak the base and always check the manufacturers’ instructions.

Mattress Care

Most mattresses are made well enough that they don’t need rotating, however turning your mattress over from side and side and end to end every few months will help upholstery fillings settle down more evenly.  If you have a new mattress, don’t leave polythene wrappings on it – dampness, mildew and rotting could all result from a build-up of condensation. Vacuum, or better still, use a soft brush on your mattress from time to time to remove fluff and dust.

It’s also worth considering investing in a good quality mattress protector. Designed to protect against soiling and general wear and tear, mattress protectors will keep your bedding and bed fresher and cleaner for longer. Using a protector and rotating regularly can extend your mattress’s life.

Bedding Care

When it comes to laundry care many of us will wash our sheets, pillow cases and duvets covers on a regular basis. How often you wash these essential bedding items is a personal preference. In general, it’s a good idea to wash them weekly and tumble dry according to label instructions. However, when we think about spring cleaning, bedding items such as duvets and pillows are frequently neglected or forgotten.

It is recommended that duvets are professionally cleaned, if you choose to launder them yourself, always read and follow the specific care instructions on the product label. Ensure they are dried thoroughly to avoid ‘clumping’ of filling and shake regularly during the drying process to keep the filling loose. In between washes, hang your duvet on a clothesline on a dry, breezy day every few months. You can also fluff it in the dryer, just as you would a pillow.

Many pillows are fully washable although it is advisable to replace them every two years. Pillows that have become lumpy or discoloured will no longer provide proper support and could contain high levels of dust mites and skin; a nuisance for allergy sufferers. A simple way of extending the life of your pillow is to use a pillow protector. Easily slipping over the pillow, they retain the effect of a Pillow Feel and are available in a range of fabric types and textures.  Highly absorbent and breathable, they can also help to prevent skin infections and irritations.  Many pillow protectors are now machine washable and tumble dry safe for added convenience. In between washes, plump pillows daily when you make your bed, to keep the filling from becoming flattened.

New Year, New Bed?

Sleep, beautiful sleep

Now that the New Year has arrived, maybe you’ve decided that this is the year that you’re going to sleep better.  Often unaware that our bed is one of the main reasons for not sleeping well, sleeping in a bed that no longer provides the proper support or comfort can affect the quality of our sleep. According to research conducted by sleep expert Dr Chris Idzikowski, sleeping in an uncomfortable bed could cost you up to an hour’s sleep a night.

Am I due a New Bed?

Changes in our lifestyle and the quality, care and amount of use our beds get impact on whether we need to think about buying a new bed. Factors such as getting married, moving to a new home, losing or gaining weight and our age can affect the level of comfort and support our bed provides. How we use our beds and the length of time we spend in them e.g. reading, watching television or the occasional use of a spare bed can be the deciding factors in choosing a new bed.  Buying a new bed is an important investment especially when we consider that we spend a third of our life in bed.

The Bed M.O.T.

Ask yourself the following 10 questions to find out whether you’re ready for a new bed:

1. Is it seven or more years old? The critical ‘Seven year itch’ can be a make or break moment for many marriages and mattresses.
No [ ] Yes [ ]

2. Did you have your best night’s sleep recently on a different bed?
No [ ] Yes [ ]

3. Are you waking up more frequently feeling unrefreshed and with aching joints?

6. Does it feel lumpy?
No [ ] Yes [ ]

7. Does it make suspicious noises in the night or when you turn the mattress?

8. Is it sagging in the middle – do you and your partner roll towards each other unintentionally during the night?
No [ ]  Yes [ ]

9. Are the base, legs or castors lumpy, worn or wobbly?
No [ ] Yes [ ]

10. Would it be embarrassing if the neighbours saw your bed without its covers?

If you answered yes to four or more questions the advice from the Sleep Council is to “Get a new bed fast”.

How to Create the Perfect Sleep Environment

The Perfect Sleep Environment

Did you wake up this morning feeling refreshed? If not, you’re not alone. According to the recently published Great British Sleep Survey, people from Northern Ireland are considered among the ‘Worst Sleepers’ in the UK.

What Keeps us Awake?

Citing bodily discomfort, noise, partners, room temperature and light levels as the top five physical factors affecting sleep, “the racing mind” was considered the main cause of Sleeplessness. Affecting us both emotionally and physically, Sleep Deprivation significantly contributes to daytime fatigue and lack of concentration.

What Sleep Advice is Available?

Fortunately though, organisations such as The Sleep Council are here to help, and as a certified member of The Sleep Council, Dalzell’s of Markethill are fully trained to offer expert bed, mattress and sleep advice to our customers.  Or why not check out our Bed and Mattress Buyers Guides at Armagh Beds.com Still unsure if your Bed or Bedroom is giving you the Quality Sleep you deserve? Read on for some top tips  to creating the perfect sleep environment from sleep expert, Kathleen McGrath.

Top Tips for the Perfect Sleep Environment:

  1. Just the Right Temperature – between 16 and 18 degrees centigrade. Feeling too hot or too cold in the night can lead to restless sleep and wakefulness.
  2. Kept dark. Light is a common sleep ‘robber’ so investing in a good pair of well lined curtains which keep the Light Out and the Room Dark can be really helpful.
  3. Free from Distractions. So lose the laptop, the mobile, the computer games, the television and anything else that is likely to distract from the serious business of sleep!
  4. Comfortable. And central to comfortable is a Good Supportive Bed – the bigger the better (for less partner disturbance) and as good as the budget can stretch to: we spend a third of our life in bed so why compromise on the cost of a good night’s sleep?
  5. Relaxing. The bedroom should be an oasis of Calm and Tranquility – uncluttered and devoted to the land of dreams.
