Staples Beds History

Staples beds and mattresses have been providing people with healthy, restful sleep since 1895 when Ambrose Heal purchased the United Kingdom rights to the Patent for 'Improvements in Support for Upholstery Springs'. From the outset, Heal made an impact on the bedding industry by introducing the "Staples Patent Spiral Spring Mattress." These original Staples beds were made of brass and metal tubes, iron or a combination of both. As the company developed and grew, Staples took out new patents and the Staples Interior Overlay went into production in the late 1920s. Acquired by Myer’s Beds in 1986 Staples beds became part of the Hilding Anders Group in 2007.

Staples can add royalty to its long list of satisfied customers over the decades. King George V was advised by his physicians to sleep on a Staples bed due to its superiority in maintaining correct spinal support. Receiving the Royal Warrant in 1932, it has been renewed by successive monarchs ever since, Staples Beds has enjoyed this prestigious Royal Appointment which recognises individuals or companies who have supplied goods or services for at least five years to HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh or HRH The Prince of Wales. Regarded as demonstrating excellence and quality, Royal Warrants are highly prized.

Staples is a member of the National Bed Federation and certified member of the Sleep Council. Staples beds are FSC Certified (Forrest Stewardship Council) and they enjoy the highly prized Royal Warrant as a supplier of goods or services to HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh or HRH The Prince of Wales.

Staples manufacture an extensive range of beds, mattresses and headboards. This is evident in its two main bed collections; the Staples Traditional Collection and its Limited Edition Collection. The Staples traditional beds collection includes the Denver Backcare, Boudica, Guinevere, Gwendolen, Cleopatra, Cordelia, Eleanor, Ottoman and Britannia range. 

The Staples Britannia is one of the Company’s premium quality beds. With 4000 pocketed springs and a deep layer of hand-teased fine hair, the Staples Brittannia bed doesn’t lose its flexibility and includes luxurious cashmere, silk, bamboo, wool and cotton for enhanced breathability. With an optional zip and link on the 180cm mattress each partner can choose their preferred tension of mattress to suit their comfort and support needs. 

With a lower pocketed spring count at 1000, the Staples Eleanor bed is upholstered in bamboo and cotton for enhanced breathability. Traditional hand side-stitching is used to provide either a choice of firm-edge or fully sprung base to give full support to the mattress. With an optional zip and link on the 180cm mattress this innovative solution is perfect for partners that differ in the level of support and individual comfort they require from their mattress tension. As with many of the Staples divan beds, hardwood corner blocks provide extra strength and stability to the base.

The Staples Limited Edition Collection includes its Memory Sleep beds and the Staples Pocket Ortho bed. Suitable for bed frames the Staples Memory Sleep mattress has 800 pocket springs complemented by an integral layer of deep memory foam for pressure relief and support. The Memory Sleep foam bed comes with a non-turn mattress as standard complete with a soft-knit quilted cover for added comfort. Benefiting from a padded platform top divan, the Staples Memory Sleep bed has a range of drawer options for extra storage. 

The Staples Pocket Ortho also enjoys 800 pocket springs with its integral dual-density duo-pad for firmer support. The mattress is encased in a quality damask cover which is both durable and soft. This convenient no-turn quilted mattress benefits from a padded platform top divan which provides additional support and is suitable for bed frames. 

Manufacturing a range of stylish headboards the Staples headboard collection is finished in exquisite suede and luxury fabrics. All Staples headboards are designed to fit 90cm, 135cm, 150cm and 180cm divan beds. The Staples Regal Headboard with its curved shape and available in a choice of four colour options - Purple Suede, Holly Fabric, Asimov Fabric and Linden Fabric would complete contemporary or traditionally styled bedrooms alike.
