Sleep apnoea occurs when your breathing stops and starts while you sleep. The most common type is called obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). Symptoms and signs can include snoring, stopping breathing during sleep, waking a lot during the night and making gasping or choking noises.
One way of reducing mild sleep apnoea symptoms is by raising your head in bed while you sleep. An adjustable bed is ideal for this.
Sleep Apnoea and Sleep
An electric bed allows you to raise the upper part of the bed, elevating the head in the process. This position is ideal for anyone that suffers from obstructive sleep apnoea as it clears the airways preventing the tongue from falling to the back of the throat.
A raised head position reduces the risk of snoring and sleep apnoea while supporting the correct posture. Sleeping on your side also helps. An electric bed’s mechanism allows you to adjusts the bed that supports an elevated or side sleeping position.
MiBed’s High-Low mechanism allows the whole bed frame to raise and lower. The five-section, variable adjustments include a head/backrest, a leg-raise and a knee break.
If your sleep apnoea is mild, you may not need treatment. But some people do need medical intervention and use a CPAP machine. Helping to improve your breathing while you sleep, a CPAP machine pumps air into a mask that you wear on your face during sleep.
A CPAP machine prevents the airways from narrowing while you sleep, which in turn
reduces the symptoms linked to sleep apnoea. An adjustable electric bed and interventions such as a CPAP machine can go some way to alleviating the symptoms experienced by sleep apnoea sufferers.
Other treatments include using a mandibular advancement device or surgery to help with your breathing.
