What is the Sleep Council?

Established in 1995, The Sleep Council is funded by the National Bed Federation, the trade association for British bed manufacturers. As the consumer education arm the Sleep Council aims to:

  • Raise awareness of the importance of a good night’s sleep to health and wellbeing.
  • Provide helpful advice and tips on how to improve sleep quality.
  • Provide helpful advice on choosing the right bed for optimum sleeping comfort.

What does the Sleep Council do?

The Sleep Council produces a range of leaflets and guides to help people make an informed choice when buying a new bed. The guides include the Bed Buyers Guide, the Sleep Good Feel Good Guide and the Goodnight Guide for Children. The Sleep Council also produces and houses a series of articles and facts sheets in its library covering advice and tips for senior citizens, children, young people, shift workers and travellers; in addition to its hot weather and cold weather leaflets.

Committed to research into sleeping habits, back pain, beds, bedding and dust mites, the Sleep Council regularly conducts surveys and consults experts in the field to keep people better informed on healthy sleep habits.

The Sleep Council coordinates a number of awareness raising campaigns throughout the year including National Bed Month in March and National Sleep In Day in the Autumn.

Advice from the Sleep Council

The Seven Year Hitch - Time To Change Your Bed?

To ensure you get the best possible night’s sleep waking up feeling refreshed and looking and feeling your best, the Sleep Council recommends you start to think about replacing your bed after seven years.

The Sleep Council reminds us that some of the reasons why your bed may not be giving you the correct support or comfort for a healthy night’s sleep after 7 years is because:

  • A study by The Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA) showed beds that were just six years old were much less comfortable than a new one.
  • Top sleep expert Dr Chris Idzikowski found buying a new bed could be more effective than sleeping tablets!
  • French scientists compared sleep on a new bed versus an old bed and found people enjoyed much better quality sleep with less tossing and turning.
  • On average we lose half a pint of fluid each night and shed a pound of dead skin cells a year. No wonder asthma-triggering dust mites love our mattresses.
  • In America, back pain sufferers reported a 63% improvement after sleeping on a new bed (and.82% of back pain experts feel the right bed can help sufferers).
