Types Of Mattresses
Important Considerations
A good quality mattress with the right base can make the difference between having a good night’s sleep or a fitful one. The correct mattress aids deeper, more refreshing sleep by giving you better support. Considering a premium quality mattress can last up to 7 years, buying a new mattress is a long term investment and you should buy the best you can afford. At Armagh Beds.com and Dalzells of Markethill we have hundreds of mattresses in stock from the leading UK manufacturers that include Respa, Myers, King Koil, Staples, Kaymed, Sleeptight and Slumber Night. We want you to have complete confidence when buying a new mattress. The ability to choose the right mattress comes through an understanding of what you actually need and what’s available. We have produced this guide to help you make an informed choice about the right mattress for you.
Continuous Spring Mattresses
Continuous Spring Mattresses are sometimes also referred to as Mira Coil Mattresses and are made from a single length of wire which is 'knitted' into a series of interwoven springs which usually run up and down the length of a mattress with a verticle rather than a horizontal linking system. As a general rule these mattresses use a lighter gauge of wire than open coil mattresses which will usually mean a reduced level of support. Continuous Coil Mattreses are usually finished with a layer of thick quilting. Continuous Coil Mattreses are very much an entry level sleeping solution and should not be chosen for the long term.
Open Coil Mattreses
Open Coil Springs are the most widely used type of support system in mattresses today and are sometimes also known as a Bonnell Spring. Open Coil Sprung Mattresses are arranged in rows and connected to one another, top and bottom by a spiral helical wire with a tensioned outer rod strenthening the perimeter to keep the mattress shape. In a typical 5' mattress this would total around 325 coils but some mattresses may have more. The higher the number of the springs, and the higher the spring gauge in the mattress, the more support it will provide. Open Coil Mattresses are usually finished with a thick layer of quilting and foam.
Pocket Sprung Mattresses
Pocket Sprung Mattresses contain hundreds of individual springs that are sealed in a fabric pocket and stitched together. This unique and increasingly popular arrangement results in a support system that prevents the springs from rolling into each over when under pressure. Pocket Springs are usually combined with Memory Foam or Talalay Latex to complete a Pocket Sprung Mattress. Such mattresses are of a higher quality and provide excellent support. They are also very silent when in use, i.e. no squeaks. Pocket Sprung Mattresses are usually finished in a variety of ways including thick layers of quilting, tufting and sometimes with a layer of memory foam.
Latex Mattresses
Latex Mattresses, also known as Talalay Mattreses, are a premium bedding product. Derived from the sap of a rubber tree, Latex Mattresses have a distinctive, resilient feel which is incredibly durable and which provides long lasting support, conforming perfectly to your body's contours for supreme comfort and spinal support. The aerated, self ventilated open cell interior of a Latex Mattress helps to disperse body moisture which therein helps to maintain a consistently fresh, dry mattress. In addition to this, Latex has anti-microbial properties, inhibiting bacteria, fungi and dust mites benefitting those with allergies or respiratory problems. A Latex Mattress never requires turning, are silent in use and the independent support offered means that the most restless nights sleep won't waken your partner.
Memory Foam Mattresses
Memory Foam Mattresses, also known as Visco Mattresses, use a Polyurethane foam (a synthetic petroleum based material) which slowly responds to body temperature and weight to take the shape of the user. This individual moulding process to your body's shape, provides unrivalled suport and comfort thus guaranteeing relief for back, neck and joint pain through the best natural sleeping posture with pressure evenly distributed across the mattress area. Memory Foam Matresses slowly return to their original shape after use and are usually combined with single or twin open coil springs.
