The number of springs used in an open coil bed varies, and level of support offered depends on the gauge (thickness) of the wire, with 12.5 providing firm support. In some models the metal coils run through the width of the bed, and others run from head to foot, which helps stop roll together. These are strengthened and held in tension through an outer perimeter rod which also helps to retain its shape.

Somewhat different from an Open Coil spring, a Continuous Spring bed involves smaller coils and the gauge of wires is usually lighter. This higher spring count is usually formed from a single length of wire and the bed springs are linked vertically as opposed to horizontally. Continuous sprung interiors give a smooth, responsive feel with no roll-together properties.

Open interior sprung beds use a wide variety of fillings to create different comfort levels; chosen for their resilience, durability, flexibility and ability to absorb body moisture. In cheaper models, fillings usually come in compact pads; in better quality models, layers of loose fillings in greater volumes are often preferred.
