How To Clean A Mattress

How-To-Clean-A-Mattress

Considering we spend a third of our life in bed, we need to make sure that what we’re sleeping on is up to scratch.

A good quality mattress is a serious investment and needs maintaining to keep it at its best.

Over time, mattresses build up all sorts of nasty smells, bugs, sweat and skin debris.

It’s important, therefore, that we introduce a regular cleaning schedule to rid our mattresses of these nasties.

Why Do You Need To Clean A Mattress?

According to The Sleep Council, “A typically used mattress has anywhere from 100,000 to 10 million mites inside.”

Not only that, but “the average adult loses around half a pint (285 ml) of moisture each night while sleeping in bed”

Cleaning your mattress should be part of your regular mattress care routine to make sure it’s hygienic and fresh.

How Often Should You Clean A Mattress?

It’s recommended that you clean your mattress at least twice a year.

Before cleaning, check for any general wear and tear, discolouration, lumps or protruding springs.

If your mattress is non-turn, rotate it from top to bottom that way the fillings will be able to settle back into their natural position.

If it’s turnable, flip it over as this will promote even wear and prolong its life.

A quick vacuum on and around the mattress area will remove any dust or debris that has gathered during the winter months.

You could even sponge down the mattress surface with light soapy water, making sure not to soak through.

Weather permitting, let your mattress dry out in the sun.

Make sure and dry the mattress thoroughly before dressing the bed again. A damp mattress can lead to mould, mildew, and bacteria growth.

If you’ve just bought a new mattress, don’t leave polythene wrappings on it – dampness and mildew could result in a build-up of condensation.

It’s also worth considering investing in good quality mattress protectors. Designed to protect against soiling and general wear and tear, mattress protectors will keep your bedding and bed fresher and cleaner for longer.
