Is My Teen Sleep Deprived?

Sleep Deprived Teens

By now, most young people have returned to school and parents and teens alike are trying to get routines back in sync.

From reestablishing bedtime routines to getting everyone up on time for the morning school drop off, invariably not everything runs as smoothly as planned.

Too much screen time, worries and stress about going back to school and going to bed late all contribute to sleep-deprived teens.

So, how much sleep do teenagers need?

How Much Sleep Do Teenagers Need?

Growth spurts in teen years mean that young people need to rest and sleep. It’s recommended that young people get between 8 – 9 hours of sleep each night.

We know that sleep is essential for our physical well-being, but it’s just as important for our mental health.

Lack of sleep can lead to problems with attention, retaining information, decision making, problem-solving and, of course, creativity – all of which are important to school performance.

Blue light emitted from smartphones and tablets interferes with young people’s internal body clocks, suppressing melatonin levels which they need to nod off.

Sleep research has shown that missing out on sleep is not only bad for brainpower but lack of sleep can lead to an altered mood.

It also increases the chances of coming down with coughs, colds and upset stomachs – especially among students and young adults.

How Can You Help Your Teenager Get Better Sleep

  1. Young people should aim to get 8-9 hours of sleep per night
  2. Smartphones, computers, phones and other electrical equipment should be switched off at least one hour before sleep.
  3. Caffeinated fizzy drinks and coffee should be avoided late at night.
  4. A growing teen also means that their childhood bed may not be fit for purpose anymore. Best to check that your teenage child’s bed is big enough for them and providing the right levels of comfort and support.
  5. Encourage your child to take regular exercise. Even a small amount of daily exercise can help refresh the body and mind, so aim to build in a little into your daily routine.
  6. Watch The Sleep Council’s video which is packed with lots of helpful sleep advice for teenagers.
