Out With The Old And In With The New…Bed!

How to buy a new bed

The New Year signifies a time of change and transformation, offering us the chance to discard those things that hold us back.

For many the New Year encourages us to kick bad habits and establish new routines, from getting fit, eating healthier, to getting more and better sleep

Most adults need between six and nine hours of sleep every night and yet almost two-thirds of us suffer from sleep problems.

Buy the right bed and you could be buying into night after night of quality sleep,” says Lisa Artis of The Sleep Council. “Anyone who has ever slept in a really comfortable or really dreadful old bed will know how it can affect the quality of sleep.”

If you know you need a new bed, but are unsure what you want or what suits you best, check out The Sleep Council’s guide to the questions you should be asking yourself…

New Bed Checklist

  1. Are you buying your bed for yourself or another person?
  2. Is the bed for one person or two?
  3. What do you (or did you) like about your current bed? Think about the size, the feel, the style etc.
  4. What sort of bed are you looking for?
  5. Do you need storage?
  6. What’s your budget?
  7. What size of bed are you after?
  8. Have you got room for a bigger bed?
  9. What comfort/feel do you like?
  10. Have you a preference towards a construction type or material?
  11. Will turning a mattress be difficult for you?
  12. Do you tend to get hot in bed?
  13. Do you have any health problems? Eg back or shoulder pain, struggling to get out of bed? If so, an adjustable bed may be a good solution.
  14. Do you have any allergies or allergic conditions? Eg asthma, rhinitis, eczema?
  15. Do you need new pillows?
  16. Are there likely to be any problems getting your new bed into the room it’s intended for?

Try Before Your Buy

Once the above checklist has been completed it’s important to try a selection of beds for comparison before you buy. With a wide range of beds and mattresses available, we at Dalzell’s recommend you come in store and try different beds.

Ideally your mattress should mould to your body; too soft and your body will slouch which could result in back pain; too firm and your hips and shoulders pressure points could feel discomfort.Mattress Support Guide

Wear comfortable clothing, remove any outdoor wear including your shoes and lie on each bed for quite a long time – at least 5 minutes. Lie in your normal sleep position and make some turns, too.

Size also matters. Larger beds are more comfortable and being disturbed by a partner is one of the most common sleep complaints. With a king size or super king bed you are less likely to disturb one another and ideally your bed should be about 6in (15cm) longer than the tallest user.

Like everything in life, you get what you pay for in regards of both product and service so spend as much as you can afford.  Buying a new bed is a long term investment. Considering the average lifespan of a mattress is around 7 years, it’s worth spending as much as you can afford to get a good quality, comfortable bed.

So what are you waiting for? Maybe it’s time to say, out with the old and in with the new…!
